Ron Bruno is a certified Utah Law Enforcement Officer with over twenty years of experience. Ron began his law enforcement career with the Salt Lake City Police Department and continues as a reserve patrol officer with the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake. Ron has served in numerous assignments throughout his career and as an instructor to enhance the skills of fellow officers.
Ron attended the Memphis Police Department’s CIT Academy in 2000 and returned to Utah to put his training to practice as a CIT Patrol Officer and as a CIT Coordinator. After being appointed CIT Utah Program Director in 2002, Ron's leadership expanded the once single location, four-trainings a year program, into a true statewide program with CIT Academies being conducted by local law enforcement and mental health regional partnerships throughout Utah, as well as developing a statewide CIT Academy for Correction Officers. Ron was also instrumental in the development of the gold standard Salt Lake County Crisis Response System and has participated on numerous councils and committees dedicated to more effective crisis services.
Ron's department, under his direction as CIT Utah Program Director, was identified as a national learning site for criminal justice / mental health collaborations by the Council of State Governments in partnership with the U.S. Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Assistance. As the CIT Utah Program Director, Ron was a resource for communities throughout the nation interested in developing more effective criminal justice / behavioral health services integration and has assisted communities in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Nevada with development of their own CIT programs.
Ron has worked with the National Empowerment Center, the providers of the "Hearing Voices" curriculum, by expanding their original recordings and adapting the simulation activities to make them more relevant for law enforcement to be used in CIT Academies throughout the country; he has worked with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in the development of their manual, “Responding to Youth with Mental Health Needs” that helps communities understand law enforcement’s involvement with early identification of mental health needs, appropriate officer responses, and the importance of collaborative efforts; he has partnered with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) as a consultant to assist with the development and conducting of Law Enforcement Leadership Institutes on Juvenile Justice; and has been invited on several occasions to meet with members of the United States Congress to discuss criminal justice / behavioral healthcare services integration and funding issues.
Ron Bruno, is an appointed member of the Interdepartmental Serious Mental Illness Coordinating Committee (ISMICC) as established in accordance with the 21st Century Cures Act. The committee reports to the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, United States Congress, and any other relevant federal department or agency on issues regarding serious mental illnesses or serious emotional disturbances.
Ron is the Director of CTS Services, LLC, an organization that provides de-escalation training to law enforcement officers and other disciplines throughout the country; and a founding board director / executive director of CIT Utah, Inc., a nonprofit corporation that advocates for the integration of criminal justice and behavioral health services as well as more effective crisis response systems throughout Utah.
Ron was invited to be a founding board director of CIT International and served two terms. During his initial terms, Ron was the Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee and was instrumental in the development of CIT International’s first strategic plan. After fulfillment of his second term, Ron continued to be active through committee work as the Chair of the Conference Workshop Committee until he was once again elected to the Board of Directors and as the corporation's 2nd Vice President.
